Problem 4.30

Problem 4.32

Your mean is at the seven and +/- 1 standard deviation is between 9 and 10
and 4and 5 on the previous graph for 4.30.
Problem 4.35
a) A = 1/2 * 2 * 1 = 1
b) 0.5, shade the area from 1 to left
c) A=1/2 * 0.5 * 0.5 = 0.125

Problem 4.38

Problem 4.39

Problem 4.40
a)

The height must be 1/2, because the total area must always equal 1

Problem 4.41

Problem 4.43

Problem 4.47
a) 86/100 = .86
b) Check our rules of thumb: #1 Our population is at least 10 times as large as our sample
#2: 0.86*100=86 and (1-0.86)*100=14 which are both greater than 10

c) The author and I disagree, because he used a standard deviation equal to 0.03,
where I use 0.035 (actually 0.034699). In his case only 9% are actually late, so the
claim is true, but using an additional place, I get almost 13% late, which means the
the ad is a lie! So, the critic is correct. This is a prime example of how to get statistics
to lie for you.
Problem 4.49
a) np = 0.70(1700) = 1190

Problem 4.50
a) np = (0.2)(500) = 100
